The record on this page is somewhat limited and will follow a paternal line. Birth dates of living people for the most part are xxx. The use of Mc or Mac in front of Lellan appears to be random in the records however my birth certificate uses Mac so I will go with that. Prior to Archibald there is no positive identification of his parents or his siblings..... yet. Alex MacLellan believes Archibald's father to be Neil McLellan, of the Buirblach McLellans, one of two McLellans in Broad Cove in 1818. .From early census records it appears that the parents were born in Scotland, probably the Brincory of Morar and there were McLellan (or Mac) settlements in that area which started immigrating~1800 and continued en masse up to ~1840. However Archibald was born at Broad Cove Marsh, Inverness County in 1835 so it could be speculated that his parents were probably between 18 and 40 and immigrated prior to 1835. An 1818 census of the Broad Cove, Maragree area turns up only two McLellans. Neil, 30 years of age,two years in Cape Breton, married with one child and Alexander, age 28, also two years in Cape Breton but single. An 1838 St Maragret's Parish list of Parishoners lists sixteen McLellan's; three Johns, three Donalds, four Archibalds, two widows, Angus, Farquhar, Hugh, Neil and Alexander. The list of Parishoners in 1856 to 1916 cites thirty McLellans basically the same first names in the same ratios.

He has amassed an enormous amount of material and on this page I have attempted only to differentiate his material from mine when I have corrected my information by using Alex as a source or by using Alex's new information. Archibald and Sarah MacLellan
Archibald was born in 1835 in Broad Cove Marsh, Inverness Co., Cape Breton, and died in April 7, 1914 in Thorburn, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. He married SARAH MCLELLAN 07 Aug 1858 in Broad Cove Chapel, Inverness Co., Nova Scotia, daughter of ANGUS MCLELLAN and SARAH MCGILLIVARY. She was born 31 Oct 1840 in South West Margaree, Inverness Co., Nova Scotia.
The following information for Archibald come from "The Casket"(vol. 64 #14-1914, page 5) an Antigonish diocese Roman Catholic newspaper published every Thursday since 1850. The reference in the PANS index is 62-1914-16-5. That translates into Volume 62, year 1914, number 16 and page 5.
At Thorburn, on the 7th of April, Archibald McLellan (Ban) in the eightieth year of his age. The deceased was born at Broad Cove Marsh, Inverness County, (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) on the 1st day of August, 1835. About thirty-eight years ago, he left his native district for Minnesota but returned shortly to Pictou County (Nova Scotia), where he remained the rest of his days. He was bright, intelligent and warm hearted. A good practical Catholic, he had an edifying death. He as buried on Holy Thursday (before Easter) *approximately 5 words unreadable*.
Re Minnesota: It could also be Michigan which is being investigated further. A rumour also says that his sister was in Minnesota/Michigan.
There is an unexplainable gap in the ~yearly birthing of Sarah's children, between 1869 and 1877. It may be that Archibald had been away in the US at
this time.
The age of Archie's death links to the birth information that Alex MacLellan (Lawrence's son) found for
Archibald confirming he was born in 1835.

On April 7, 1914 there passed to his internal reward one of the pioneers of this parish in the form of Archibald McLellan who lived and died in time
of member of Mother Church. The deceased was born in Broad Cove Cape Breton and moved with his family to Pictou County in 1877. He was buried in the
Catholic Cemetery at Thorburn on April 9, 1914 after High Mass by Fr. W. McLennan.

The following information for Sarah comes from "The Casket",(vol.54 #1,-1906, page 5).
At Thorburn on the 21st of December, Sarah, aged 66, wife of Archibald McLellan. She was the daughter of the late Angus McLellan and Sarah McLellan of Broad Cove Marsh,C.B. After a long period of patient suffering she died fortified by the rites of the church. The remains were interred at Thorburn after a Requiem High Mass which was attended by very many citizens of the place, both Catholic and Protestant. She leaves a husband and seven adult children to mourn her loss. R.I.P.

31 Jan 1899 in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Thorburn, Pictou County, daughter of JAMES FITZGERALD and MARGARET FENNESSY. She was born 19 May 1875 in Pine
Tree, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, and died 1954 in Stellarton(Lourdes), Pictou County, Nova Scotia. He married UNKNOWN MCDONALD. She was born before 1879,
and died before 1899.
In the 1911 census they are in Thorburn, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Ennumeration District 36, page 3, line 24. John A. is a coal miner, b. November
1860 and 50 years of age who worked 48 hours a week for 50 weeks last year. Johanna b. May 1875 was the wife aged 36.
In PANS MFM 19951, P106 there is a will registered on Nov 13, 1954. She left everything to two daughters, Anna Florentine McLellan (called Nancy) and Margret Constance McLellan (called Peg). The will was completed Jan 19, 1950. John and Johanna are buried in Lourdes Parish Cemetery, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Cameron-pg 235, para 2 Allan Shaft Explosion 1918 The rescuers found the body of stableman Alex Maclellan standing up in the stable, leaning against the wall, his hand grasping harness hanging from a peg. He had been overcome instantly by carbon monoxide. He was the first of two bodies found in an upright position. Note: His name was actually John Alexander McLellan and not Alexander MacLellan. In the link above listing the men who lost their lives in the mine accident he is listed as Joh A. McLellan.

There is a baptismal certificate for Alexander(Archibald's son) who was baptized in St. Margaret's Church, Broad Cove. in 1861. He was born January 18,1861
in Broad Cove and baptized January 29, 1861 with parents Archibald and Sarah. Sponsors were Donald and Mary McLellan.
From the 1911 census Ennumerator District 43, page 14, line 4. Alexander, aged 50 was in Westville, single and boarding with a family Cassidy.

iii. Florence McLellan, b. 02 Feb, 1866 in Broad Cove Marsh, d. After 1940 m. James Murphy. See the comments for Alexander. Apparently he died at his sister Florence's home in Westville, Nova Scotia. The following information comes from the 1911 Census.(Ennumerator District 43, page 24, line 15), James has died(?) and Florence is cited as Head of the household.

John Joseph MacLellan - Glace Bay - 71, died at St. Joseph's Hospital Thursday afternoon following a lengthy illness. A native of Thorburn, N.S.,
Mr. MacLellan resided in Glace Bay for the past 53 years. He was employed in # 20 Colliery until his retirement in 1949. Mr. MacLellan resided at
658 David St., Sterling and was a member of St. Anne's church. He was well and favourably known in the community and his passing is widely
mourned. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Thomas with the RCAF in Ontario; George and Bernard in Ontario; Hugh, New Aberdeen; three
daughters, Sarah, Mrs. Lawrence Adams, Sydney; Rose at Harmon Field (near Stephenville, NF); Mary Lou at home. Service is at St. Anne's Church
at 2:30. Burial in the Parish Cemetery.

and Sarah whose birthplace is listed as Margaree. Wife's name is Sarah (Strong ?). Worked in the mines 51 years and born in Thorburn December 3, 1882.
Census, School and Church Records
1818
Note: There is little information for the family prior to this date although in 1818 there were only two McLellans in Broad Cove, one was Neil, married with one child. The second was Alexander, age 28 and single. Both are farmers and both have been in Cape Breton 2 years. Although, Alexander is a good candidate for Archibald's father, Archibald (born 1835) states that BOTH his parents were born in Scotland and Alexander would have had to marry a single girl from Scotland. Neil's parents should be checked.
1838
An 1838 church record of St. Margaret's Parish has a number of McLellans but unable to definitely link to one. See comments above.
re Archibald's obituary: The reference to leaving for Minnisota but returning thirty-eight years ago. Thirty eight years from 1914 is 1876 when he returned. It appears from Sarah's birthing schedule that he was not avilable in 1870-76. Sarah had Hugh and Margaret in 1877 and 79 in Broad Cove repectively. John Joseph was born in 1882 in Thorburn. The reference to leaving the country could refer to the period 1869 to 1877.

1881
No record of Archibald in the 1881 census in Thorburn or Nova Scotia. John A. born in 1859(now 22) should be somewhere. Since John Joseph's birthplace was listed as Thorburn, it is assumed that the family was in Thorburn at this time.
1891
Archibald shows up in the 1891 census in Thorburn, north of Sherbrooke Road. He is said to be 56 and Sarah 48. Daniel is living at home (22 Years old), Maggie (17? should be 12), Hugh (14) and John J (8). All are born in Nova Scotia but Archie and Sarah's parents were born in Scotland. Everyone is RC and Archibald and Daniel are coal miners. Missing are John A.(32),Mary (29),Flora(27) and Annie (22) from this census.
1901
Archibald shows up in the 1901 census in Thorburn, Pictou County(PANS MFM 574, second group on page 4 or g(1)-2, page 4, line 8) He is listed as a labourer in the coal mine and makes $300/year. It states he was born on August 1, 1835 but it also states he is 65 years old(?).He was born in Nova Scotia, is RC and both parents were born in Scotland. (possibly Morar). In the same household was,
i.Sarah born on October 31, 1840, aged 60
ii.Daniel, born May 22, 1867, 34 years old, a coal miner making $480/year
iii.John J, born December 2, 1882, aged 18 and he spent 10 months in school that year
Missing are John A.(see below), Alexander, Mary, Annie, Flora, Maggie and Hugh from this census.
The census indicates that both Archibald and Daniel have worked in the Thorburn coal mines for twelve years.
In the same census there is a John (b. April 15, 1859) married to Johanna (b. May 19, 1875) with a baby Mary (b. July 3, 1900). John is a coal miner earning $480/year and has worked in the Thorburn mines for twelve years. John says he is of Scottish descent and Johanna says she is Irish.
1911
In the 1911 Census Archibald is found in Ennumerator District 36 (Thorburn), page3, line 24. The following information was taken for the people in his house:
i. Archibald, b. 1835 and aged 75 years. He describes himself as a labourer who worked 30 weeks last year for an annual wage of $100.
ii. Margaret, b. 1873 and aged 37 years. She describes herself as a housekeeper.
iii. Edward, b. 1889 and aged 22 years. He describes himself as a coal miner who worked 50 weeks at 48 hours per week last year for an annual
wage of $240.
iv. Angus, b. 1892 and aged 18 years. He describes himself as a coal miner who worked 50 weeks at 48 hours per week last year for an annual
wage of $240.
v. Howard (L.C.(?)), b. 1901 and aged 10 years. He is attending school.
vi. Sarah (T.C.(?)), b. 1902 and aged 9 years. She is attending school.
The 1911 census also has John A.(Archibald, Unknown) and Johanna
